Canberra/Broulee Nippers is an award-winning program that trains around 140 young potential lifesavers right here in Canberra. Run by Broulee Surfers Surf Life Saving Club, we bring the beach to the bush — giving Canberra kids and their families the skills, confidence and fun of surf lifesaving, even hundreds of kilometres from the coast.

Our program was recognised as the 2018 Surf Life Saving Australia Community Program of the Year, and we’re proud to continue that tradition of excellence every season.

How it works

We train at the Canberra Olympic Pool in Civic, with approximately every third session held at Broulee Beach. The season runs during ACT school Terms 4 and 1 (the warmer months), with a break over the school holidays. During the season we also attend three Nipper carnivals, which are a highlight for kids and families alike.

Nippers is not a ‘drop and run’ activity. Every Nipper is required to have a parent or guardian in attendance to help with supervision, setting up gear, BBQing and leading activities. We provide parents with all the training they need — it’s a great program for the whole family to get involved in a fun and healthy lifestyle.
