Peter Cook "Cookie" Surfboat

← Back to Named Craft

The Peter “Cookie” Cook surfboat was purchased in 2003 and named after our Surf Boat Captain who was tragically killed in a motorbike accident in mid-2003. Peter was the Club’s Surfboat Captain and rower from 1999 to 2003.

The Canberra Tradies boat

In 1997, Peter gained sponsorship for a new surfboat from the Canberra Tradies Club — a South Coast built surfboat. After his passing, “In memory of Cookie” was placed on the splash deck. This boat, now known as the “Abstract Painting” boat, is still used in Canberra for training and marathon racing. It has Cookie on the stern and still carries “In memory of Cookie” on the splash deck. Over its 27 year lifespan it has been swept by Bert Hunt, Andrew Pope and Gary Pettigrove.

The Peter Cook Surfboat

The Peter Cook surfboat was acquired in 2003 and Peter’s name was placed across the front of the hull. It was christened on Broulee Beach in November 2003 after a Far South Coast Branch surfboat carnival. The champagne bottle was broken by his wife Dominique Cook using Peter’s builder’s hammer, watched by his three children.

The boat was raced at Broulee and swept by Tony Dale and Rob Pollock for many years. The boat is still owned by the Club and is currently used for social rowing and training at Broulee.

There is a memorial oar in the Broulee Clubhouse showing Peter’s personal achievements in surfboat racing.

Both the Cookie boats continue to be used by the Club — it is an honour that Peter’s name is there for all to see on both boats.
