Our named craft
Honouring the members who gave so much to our club and our communityThe Broulee Surfers Surf Life Saving Club honours members who have made a significant and lasting contribution to the leadership and operations of the Club over many years. Their name is placed across a craft in recognition of their service — seen by all who use it and all who watch over our beaches.
We thank these members for their momentous involvement in making our beaches safer for the beach-going public.
Greg Pay Jet Boat
A foundation member and Life Member, Greg Pay was instrumental in establishing the Club’s jet boat and IRB services in the early 1980s. Club President, Chief Instructor and Branch Delegate — Greg and Judy Pay helped build the club from the ground up.
Gordon Harris Surfboat
Life Member Gordon Harris served the Club for over 24 years as Club Secretary, Registrar, Radio Officer and Branch Delegate. The “GH” surfboat, built in 2010, went on to achieve remarkable success including a 2nd place at the World Titles Under 19 in 2013.
Peter Cook “Cookie” Surfboat
Named in memory of beloved Surf Boat Captain Peter “Cookie” Cook, who was tragically killed in a motorbike accident in 2003. Cookie’s name lives on across two boats still used by the Club today — a lasting tribute to a much-loved member.
Claudia Dixon Surfboat
Named in 2017 for Club Person of the Year Claudia Dixon, this boat’s crew made history as the first female crew ever to row across Bass Strait from Victoria to Tasmania — one of the Club’s most extraordinary achievements.
Donny Szell Surfboat
Don Szell has patrolled Broulee beach for 35 years — one of the Club’s longest serving continuous members. Named in 2024 after the Club’s surfboat crews raised nearly $30,000 to purchase it, the Don Szell surfboat immediately won a silver medal at the Australian Championships.
Michael “Spike” Spellacy Surfboat
Life Member Michael “Spike” Spellacy has patrolled Broulee beach for over 40 years. Named in 2011, the Spike surfboat has become one of the Club’s most successful competitive craft — including a World Championship win in Adelaide in 2018.
Peter McKay “Fuzzy” IRB
Life Member Peter “Fuzz” McKay has patrolled Broulee beach for 35 years and managed the Club’s IRB fleet to four boats and six motors. Named in 2023 in a surprise ceremony — Peter stood stunned as he unpacked the new IRB to find his own name on the front.
