Peter Halkett
Peter Halkett has been a devoted member of Broulee Surfers SLSC since transferring from Batemans Bay in 1999. His surf lifesaving career began even earlier — he gained his Surf Rescue Certificate in 1978 at Batemans Bay and served there for many years, long before Surfguard existed to record it. His life membership recognises more than four decades of quiet, reliable service.
Patrol service
Peter served as Patrol Captain of Patrol 8 for over a decade from 2006, and has maintained an extremely diligent patrol record across more than 20 years at Broulee — completing a total of 658 patrol hours. This season he will receive his 20-year National Patrol Service Award, having never missed a season patrolling at Broulee since 1999.
The earliest record of Peter at Broulee Surfers is his Radio Operator Certificate in 1989. He also holds his IRB Driver certificate, obtained at Batemans Bay, and his Rescue Water Craft Operator certificate. Peter was an inaugural member of the Club’s callout list and has been involved in a significant number of incidents over the years.
Peter is always one of the first to put his hand up for water safety at Club and branch carnivals, and has driven an IRB many times for the George Bass Marathon supporting Broulee crews — even competing in the Bass as a rower.
Club maintenance
Peter has served as the Club’s maintenance officer since around 2007, donating his time and expertise as a qualified electrician and general handyman on countless occasions. His contribution in this role — often unseen — has kept the Club’s facilities running for nearly two decades.
Broader contribution
Beyond patrolling and maintenance, Peter has helped as a Nippers Age Manager, Duty Bar Manager, and water safety volunteer, and has supported Club fundraising events including annual door knocks and working bees.
His dedication was perhaps best illustrated this season when Peter tore his bicep in the surf at Coila Beach — an injury sustained while protecting four rowers he was ferrying to shore. Despite the injury, he still turned up to assist at the Broulee Bay to Breakers Ocean Swim in a spotting capacity, simply to help out.
A family contribution
Peter and his wife Robyn have both given a great deal to the Club. Robyn served as Club Treasurer and remained an active patroller for many years, alongside their children Jess and Lauren. The Halkett family’s contribution to Broulee Surfers spans generations.
